Are companies responsible for people being fat?

This question was recently raised in one of our classes and I must say, it brought on an interesting discussion. I was reading some articles on the internet from Time magazine and I found this one which is somewhat related but with a twist. It has to do with companies in the States that are now forcing employees to take responsibility for their health.
Read it and tell me what you think :)

Mandatory Health
By Lisa Takeuchi Cullen

If health-care reform lags slightly behind American Idol as a water-cooler topic in your office, it might be because you're one of the 160 million — or 3 out of 5 non-elderly Americans — whose employers pony up for your insurance. That cushy deal is changing, thanks to Americans' Oreo-eating, couch-hugging, nicotine-clinging ways. Soon the boss may tell employees to get healthy — or get lost.
The health-care contract between American workers and their employers began when Franklin D. Roosevelt left health care out of his New Deal. Labor restrictions, tax breaks and accounting rules induced employers to offer private health insurance to workers. In 1940, 21 million Americans were enrolled in company-sponsored health plans; by 1950, 142 million. Privatized health insurance seemed like a glorious triumph for capitalism. Keep government out; let industry thrive!
Then costs exploded. Health-care expenditures in the U.S. totaled $27 billion in 1960; in 2005, $2 trillion. Oh, workers paid their part, in the form of premiums and co-pays. But as benefits grew more generous, employees' contributions shrank, from 48% of all health-care costs in 1960 to 15% in 2000, according to the New England Journal of Medicine. Employers balked. So, along came managed care, as well as a jumble of other cost-tamping innovations, including high-deductible plans and health-savings accounts.
The latest innovation may wind up having the biggest impact of all: a crackdown on workers' poor health habits involving both the carrot and the (cancer) stick. See, American workers today are about as fit as caged hamsters with all-day access to the nut bowl. Our collective obesity, inactivity and refusal to part with the smokes have led to diabetes, heart disease and cancer. Who foots the bill? The boss. Who gets the blame? The boss. More than half of us cite work demands for our refusal to put down the Ho Hos and do a push-up. Eighty-four percent of Americans say we'd get healthy — honest — if only the boss insisted.
The boss is insisting. Verizon Wireless, Microsoft and Dow Chemical dangle cash bonuses for workers who lose weight or stop smoking. A growing number of employers assign "health coaches" to monitor workers' diets and lifestyles. Two-thirds of companies offer so-called wellness programs. Office-furniture maker Steelcase is marketing a treadmill equipped with a computer: a hamster wheel with e-mail.
Some bosses are done being nice. They're firing workers for smoking, and they're screening job applicants for nicotine. Your home is no haven: Gary Ross of San Francisco was canned by a telecommunications company for using legal, medically prescribed marijuana to ease chronic back pain from injuries sustained in the Air Force. In December, a state court upheld the firing. With costs rising, count on employers to keep truffling for ways to save a buck. Count on higher premiums and deductibles, tighter restrictions on treatments, more intrusive screening and monitoring. Don't be gobsmacked if genetic testing figures into employment sooner or later. Or if want ads begin to ask for — along with fluency in Java — a clean bill of health.

Chicken Soup for the Soul

Chicken soup is chicken soup, I believe in any country. It´s something that you eat when you´re not feeling well and it always makes you feel good, right down to your soul. Well, I just wanted to share with you a book called precisely that, "Chicken soup for the Soul" by Jack Canfield. It´s a book with inspirational true stories and I know that when I read a story from it I always put the book away with a smile on my face and with a warm feeling in my soul. If you don´t want to buy the book, just search it on the internet and you can read some of the stories. I was going to choose one to place here but I decided to let you read some of the stories and maybe choose one that you like or who knows, maybe even add your own story here and we can have our own version of Chicken soup for the Soul :)

Let's take a coffee

Hi to all

with this post I leave a message, it is a well knowne (?) story but I think that we can always remember it time to time.

It is easy to forget some of the most important things in our live as well to ignore the simple friendship daily acts .

So please always remember to have a coffee with your friends

The story:

One day a professor went to his philosophy class and without a word we starts to fill a large and empty glass pot with golf balls, in the end he ask to class.
- what do you think is it full?
All the students agree with the fact.
However the professor took some other small balls ( berlindes) and starts to fill the empty spaces between the golf balls. Again he asks the same question, and the answer was the same .
Then we took a box full of sand and he starts to fill again the pot, the sand has cover all the empty spaces on the pot, and he asks the same question and the answer of course was the same FULL!!!.
However the professor goes out side the class room and when he came in he bought a coffee cup and he starts to fill the pot, and the coffee was drain by the sand.
The students start laughing.
Then the professor says :
- The pot is your life, first of all there is You, your family and friends, the most important for you(Golf Balls), then you have all the other things, you job, you club, you car, your house (berlindes), then you have a lot of small things, but if you have put the sand first, we could not have put the golf balls and the small ones.
Our life is like the pot so please do not lose all your time with the small things, enjoy you family, enjoy your friends, lock to you, go study, be your best friend, do your favourite sport, and there always be time for the small things.
In the end a student asks.
- Professor and about the coffee? What that represents.
- I am glad you ask, it is only to remember us that there is always time and space to have a coffee with our friends.

THE END

Related with the dinner, last week-end I was talking with Carlos and Isabel and I am going to organize a camping party with a spectacular trip on a canoe in Aviz a quite nice village in Alto Alentejo, and I was thinking that it could be nice that we all go on this week-end to have some fun.

5 and 6 of April will be the dates to the party, of course is going to have Barbecue, songs and games around the fire camp and lots of fun.

I hope that all of you can come, of course that we need to rent the canoes but that will be a not expensive cost and in the next days I will give you , more information.

Don’t forget your family and/or friends.

Tell me if you would like to participate.

Bye

No comments... Its one BIG portugues artist!!!

This guy needs english lessons...

It aint (isn´t in correct English) over till it´s over...

Somebody once said .... "it aint over till it´s over". In that case I think it was about the results of a baseball game, in this case I´m commenting to Eden about the English training course finishing. Well, we´ve just started the third module so we´re not finished yet. However, upon completing the course the idea of a party sounds great to me. For those of you who don´t know me very well, I´m always ready for a party :) And, I do intend to keep writing in the blog.
I was even going to suggest to all of you the possibility of opening up this blog to others. I have some former students as well as friends and aquaintances who I think might be interested in contributing. So who knows, maybe we should think of expanding.

I´d just like to add a little something. By chance this weekend I saw two of my students from Luis Simões, curiously at the same place, with their children. I was also with one of my children. It´s nice to sometimes run into people out of the usual environment. Carla and Anabela, it was really nice to have met your kids, they´re beautiful!

Good people

Hey!
Where did all the good people go?
No one´s writing in the blog.

http://br.youtube.com/watch?v=EMBGmN94y0c

You win Its your show, now So whats it gunna be Cause people Will tune in
How many train wrecks do we need to see? Before we lose touch of
We thought this was low
It's bad gettin worse so[Chorus:]
Whered all the good people go
Ive been changin channelsI dont see them on the tv shows
Whered all the good people go
We got heaps and heaps of what we sow
They got this and that and
With a rattle a tat
Testing one two,
Now whatcha gunna do?
Bad news, misused, Got too much to loseGimme some truth
Now whos side are we on?Whatever you say
Turn on the boob tube Im in the mood to obey
So lead me astray by the way, now
Where'd all the good people go?
I've been changin channelsI dont see them on the tv shows
Whered all the good people goWe got heaps and heaps of what we sow
Sitting round feeling far awaySo far away but I can feel the debris
Can you feel it?You interrupt me from a friendly conversation
To tell me how great its all gunna be You might notice some hesitation
Cause whats important to you is not important to me
Way down by the edge of your reasons Its beginning to show And all I wanna know is..
Whered all the good people go
Ive been changin channels I dont see them on the tv shows
Whered all the good people go We got heaps and heaps of what we sow
They got this and that With a rattle a tat Testing one, two Now what you gonna do?
Bad news, misused, gimme some truth You got too much to lose Whose side are we on?Whatever you say Run the resolut but in the mood to obey
Station to station desensitizing the nation

*Please note that these song lyrics are not a good example of correct English.
But it´s always fun to read the lyrics of the songs we listen to.

This week I Will be ill

Late News:

This Thursday I'm going to be very ill, due to this illness, I Will miss the test :)

Sorry about the coment in the picture is in Portuguese, but it expresses what i feel about nest Thursday...

"Smell the roses"

In fact I feel fortunate to live in a country with such a wonderful climate. I couldn´t help but boast about our Spring-like weather to my friend Cindy after she told me that it continues cold in New York and that they are expecting snow. I confess that I do like the snow. I have very fond memories of winters in New York and sometimes even miss it! However, today after a late lunch, I went outside and read the newspaper wearing a short sleeved shirt and thought, wow...isn´t it amazing how a little sunshine can make you feel so good?
Sometimes I don´t think we simply stop for a few moments to "smell the roses", in other words, to appreciate the wonderful things that surround us. Do you ever really think about the simple things that make you feel good? Generally, they don´t even cost much. Being with family. Talking to a friend. Playing with a child. Listening to a great song. Having a long, interesting conversation.
Some quiet time alone. Isn´t it easy? How do you like to stop and "smell the roses"?

I feel sad....

As you can see ...our group is still a small one. I think we just have to stimulate our colleagues in order to participate and contribuate with ideas , opinions , fotos....in this interesting blog....
Perhaps we have to advertise it : in GLS internal newspaper??

I don't know if I am right or not ....but everyone is busy and feel tired!!!!!

However , at the moment , there is something happening in the States : the americans are choosing their new president ...And as we know, we also can feel concerned because unfortunatly the american policy and enconomy is still a reference for the rest of the world .....

Our Royal King

Hi to All

It seems that the carnival toke out of the blog all the people, no one writes.

Altough, I would like to comment an interview that I have heard last Thursday on TSF radio.

They have interviewed D. Duarte Pio de Bragança.

I am not a fan from our King, However he says sometingh that It seems to be resanoble. He says that the Portuguese Problem is that we are not logical, and we need to have a discipline in school call Logic.

Based on some atitudes from Portuguese people like for exemple :

We do not like dirty streets but we put trash and garbage on the streets.
We tinhk that to vote it is important, but we do not vote.

He sustain is argumment and for me somehow it makes sense.

Just a curiosity that I didn't Know, till hour days and since D. Carlos was murdered no King has declined is responsability and so the thron.
Since de republic implementation on October 5 1910, We didn't ,had a referend to agree or not agree with the republic.
So one of these days maybe we go to bed as republicanes and we wake up as subdits from his Royal Majesty.

Bye Bye

GNR

Hi to all

if you remenber ( fellows from my class) I've told that we have a great show in Lisbon every third sunday of each month wich is performed by GNR.

On this day they show a cerimony that represents the change of the Republican Guard in Belém Palace.

The best part hapens when the cavalary starts to play on horse.

They are the only cavalary regiment that do taht in thr world.
Febreury 17 they will perform in front Belém Palace at 11h00 do not lose it.

if you want you can check on www.gnr.pt

I´m impressed!

I´m really impressed and quite pleased as well. It seems that "blog fever" is catching on.

I can´t emphasize enough how useful this is. Just the fact of doing something a little extra is of great benefit to all, including myself.

Plus I get the added benefit of getting a glimpse of your beautiful children :)

So, you´ve seen my daughter, please meet Dário, my 13 year old son.
A colleague of ours already talked about the great movie "finding Forrester" and now i would like to talk about another movie called "The pursuit of happyness"

It´s a movie inspired in the true story of Chris Gardner, once a poor man and now a rich one.
It´s a typicall and fine american movie with, at the same time, lots of dispare and hope.

The role of Chris Gradner is performed by Will Smith that performs the role of his life.
He portraids the hope in the "amercian dream" and although the reality is very different and much harder is good to know that, somewhere out there, someone can really accomplish his dream.

The movie is very sad and most of the movie i felt bad. Describe the struggle of a poor family with lot´s of anguish and hard work too.

Nevertheless, for me, the best thing of the movie is not that but the father and son (an amaising and cute boy, son of Will Smith in real life) relationship and that is incredible.
The best part ever is when the father tells his son: “Don’t ever let someone tell you you can’t do something. Not even me. You’ve got a dream; you’ve got to protect it. You want something, you go get it. Period.” And i´ll not telling any more. You must see it to appreciate or not.

I really liked this movie. But don’t forget the hankerchiefs.

Hello

Hello Anna!
Your children are very pretty and grown up.
I´m a recent mother so i´ll have to wait several years to see my son so big. Nevertheless, I know that time past very fast so, the best thing to do, is to apreciatte each moment.
Now, my son is a cute little boy almost with 7 months and i´m a very happy and pround mummy!!!

Finding Forester

Finding Forester is a Great movie.

This is one of the movies that I classifie as an emotional action movie.

There are some movies that transmit us a great sensation of internal action, they do not need to have fights or fantastic special effects, but they leave our head or our feelings turned on a big emotions tornado.

Finding Forester to me is one of them, the rising of a young writer wich discover with the help of an experient old writer how to develop is skills and how to liberate is imagination and put in words what is in is mind and heart it's realy fantastic.

Also it is a great lesson about freindship, respect, belive, courage and human relations, between diferent generations and inside generations, something that we can allways try to aplly on our lifes, with our colegues, sons, friends, family, and to all the people that we met during our life.

A lesson, not allways understand and lived is:

Do not judge the others
Belive in people
Treat all the people as equals and with all the respect.

Bye Bye

Great work

Hi to all

Sporting......... Such a perfect Day!!!

I have just arrived from Alvalade Stadium, here the great Sporting beat FCP by 2-0.

This beautiful evening started about 17h when we arrived to the roullotes (How do we say this in English???) to drink some beers and eat some hamburgers....

After we saw the marvellous players from Sporting thrashing Porto and made the night perfect....

It reminds me of a song from Lou Reed....

Oh such a perfect day!!!
I'm so glad that I spend it with you....

Watch this version with the great Luciano Pavorotti

My daughter´s 17th birtday today :)

Ok, so if Luis is adding pictures, I´ll do the same of my daughter Gabriela who turned 17 today!
(next time I´ll send one of my son)

Somewhere Over The Rainbow

First of all, thanks Edite for adding to our blog.
We miss you and hope to see you soon.

For those of you who are not in Edite´s group, they also watched a movie this week,
different from yours, called Finding Forrester. Today after class as I was waiting for the next group to arrive, I heard a song playing at the end of the film. It reminded me of a fabulous scene from the series ER (Emergency Room) which showed here in Portugal. One of the main characters has cancer, and being a doctor, knows he´s going to die and wants to be with his wife and children. So they rent a house in Hawaii for his final days. It was very sad and playing in the background was this song "Somewhere Over the Rainbow". The song was actually first heard
in the film The Wizard of Oz, but honestly, I love this version. It´s so simple and sweet.
Here´s the link, see if you like it.

So, I´m a horse?

After filling in the profile for the blog, I discovered I am the chinese astrological sign of the horse.
Because I´m naturally curious I searched to see what this says about me and if I agree. Well, I must confess, a lot of it is true, or close.
Let me share some if it with you....
Exciting and extroverted, vivid and animated, the Horse is the life of any party he attends. He is bursting with energy, always looking for the next place to kick up his heels and hang loose. He entertains friends and strangers alike with his humor and appeal.
Horse people are extemporaneous and quick-witted. They are quite intelligent and use their practicality to their advantage in their business and personal lives. Their sharpness makes them quick to pick up new skills and are able to handle many tasks at one time. However, this ambition can be harmful because Horse people often don’t finish what they start for fear of missing out on the next big challenge.
Horses are trustworthy, friendly and open-minded. They are good friends to have and will always be honest with you. Although they are good confidants, Horse people do enjoy their alone time and are usually independent people. They can struggle with obstinance and self-centeredness, which can lead to a flare of the temper if they don’t get their way. Usually, after an episode or temper-tantrum a Horse can feel remorse, yet not all people will be able to forgive their reaction.

Oh, and look what it says about careers...

Don't be shy

Dear collegues

Don't be shy. Write.

Tell us about your life, your job, your holidays, your family.

Show us some photos...

We're is a photo of my kids... Beautiful and funny like their father....

We can do it

Hi

Today and after our classe I went to Oporto to have a meeting with our colegues ( tripeiros)I do not know how to translate this.

Filipa as came with me and during the trip we face that we need to talk a little bit more in English, so I am going to propose to my team, that we must declare a weeckly english day.

On that day we will only speack in English one to anothers.

Are you with me Filipa, Vera, André??

Let's do it.

Thanks

First of all, I´d like to thank Luis for starting this blog.
How great it will be if people actually get into the habit of contributing in writing.
I know, it´s not easy. Sometimes expressing our ideas in our own language can be difficult enough much less in a foreign language, but I urge you to make an effort to do so. In my opinion, and this may not be politically correct on my part as a teacher to say, but f*** the mistakes and express your ideas as best you can.
I´d also like to say how much I´m enjoying the classes at Luis Simões. As I have mentioned to some of the groups, being at this company has been like a breath of fresh air. The other companies I had been with in the recent past had a kind of depressing atmosphere. All of the students were great and I got along really well with them, but the morale was so low that sometimes I felt more like a psychologist than an English teacher. I really enjoy what I do and am lucky to meet a lot of great people. Each so different and with so much to teach me as well.
So let me end this entry by again asking all of you to make an effort to contribute. Trust me, it won´t hurt a bit! :)
